The Great One
They call her The Great One—Mount Denali, rising 20,310 feet into the Alaskan sky. The tallest peak in North America, she often hides behind her own weather, cloaked in cloud and mist. I was hiking through the tundra that day, scanning for grizzlies and moose, when I rounded a bend and there she was…clear, majestic, impossibly vast. It was a rare gift. Only about 30% of visitors ever glimpse her summit. For a moment, the silence, the scale, and the sheer presence of Denali made the whole journey feel like a pilgrimage.
