I had spent the entire day hiking through the wild heart of Big Cypress National Preserve, wading waist-deep through flooded sawgrass prairies beneath a sweltering sun. My legs ached, my boots sloshed, and the hum of mosquitoes never let up. Just as the light began to soften and the swamp exhaled into evening, I caught sight of this regal Great Egret… still, poised, and utterly focused on its hunt. In that moment of stillness, everything else faded.
